Sizing the system to the space, not to a guess
A sound system that is right for a 60-person function room will not carry clearly across a garden of the same guest count. Outdoors, sound disperses in every direction and ambient noise competes with your audio — wind, traffic, neighbouring noise. A system sized for indoors will push hard at its limits and may still not reach the back of the garden cleanly.
That's why we ask about your venue before quoting. Sound system hire in Johannesburg covers everything from a compact two-speaker setup in a Randburg home to a full multi-speaker rig on an outdoor terrace in Sandton. The right answer is not always obvious from guest numbers alone — the type of space, whether it's open-air or enclosed, hard surfaces or soft furnishings, all change what the system needs to do.
What a hired sound system actually covers
Most events need the same system to do several different things across the day: background music during arrival, microphone for speeches or an MC, music for dancing later on. The packages we hire out are built around this reality — a mixer that handles multiple inputs, at least one microphone, speakers on stands positioned to cover the room evenly, and enough cabling to connect it all without routing cables across walkways.
Wired microphones are standard. Wireless handheld or lapel microphones are available depending on the package. If you are running a DJ alongside speeches and background music — inputs from a laptop, a microphone, and a DJ controller simultaneously — tell us upfront and we'll make sure the mixer in your package handles it. A basic mixer is fine for a single source. Multiple inputs need a mixer spec'd to match.
For karaoke, the setup is different. Flag it when you enquire — it's a common request and we can configure accordingly, but it's not interchangeable with a standard speech-and-music setup.
Indoor versus outdoor — the question that matters most
A sound system that works for a 100-person indoor wedding in a standard Johannesburg function venue may need to be a full size larger for an outdoor garden of the same guest count. Outdoors, there's no ceiling to reflect sound back into the room, no walls to help the audio carry. The system has to work harder, and you need more output to get the same clarity.
For outdoor events — garden parties in Midrand, outdoor corporate events in Pretoria, marquee receptions — we size the system up from what the guest count alone would suggest. This is something to raise at the enquiry stage, not something to figure out on the day. A system that arrives too small for the space cannot be fixed with volume — distortion is not the same as loudness.
Sound system rental for outdoor use also raises the weather question. The equipment cannot get wet. If your venue is exposed and rain is possible, a covered position is not optional.
Running it yourself versus booking a technician
Sound system hire from us is dry hire by default — we deliver, set up, run a sound check, and hand over to you. For a straightforward event with music playback and a couple of speeches, a capable adult who paid attention during the setup briefing can manage the system without any issues. Volume, microphone level, switching inputs — it is not complicated once you have seen it set up.
Where it gets more involved: a multi-source event with a DJ, live vocals, video audio, and a microphone simultaneously needs someone actively riding the mixer levels. If that is your setup, or if you would rather not think about the audio at all, we offer a sound technician as an add-on. The technician is not included in the standard hire rate. Ask about it when you book and we'll quote separately.
When to book sound system hire in Johannesburg
December fills first. Event sound equipment rental in Gauteng is in high demand from October through to year-end, and popular Saturday dates get taken weeks in advance. For December year-end functions, four to six weeks ahead is sensible. For most other times of year, a week's notice is workable during quieter periods — but there's no advantage to leaving it until the week before.
Weddings and large corporate events at any time of year deserve more lead time, simply because the stakes are higher and flexibility on alternative dates is limited. For events in Sandton, Pretoria, or Midrand where venue bookings are fixed and the schedule is tight, earlier is always the easier position to be in.
If you're pairing the sound system with a presentation pack hire for a conference or corporate training day, book them together — it's simpler to quote and easier to make sure the audio and AV configurations are compatible before the day.
