How does sound system hire work?
You book the system, we deliver it to your venue, set everything up, run a quick sound check, and collect the kit once your event is done. We size the system to your space and guest count when you book, so you're not guessing at what you need. On the day, everything arrives ready to connect.
What's included in a hired sound system?
A standard hire includes powered speakers, speaker stands, a mixer, cables, and at least one microphone with a stand. Exact configuration depends on the package you book — the number of speakers, whether you need a subwoofer for bass, and the microphone type (wired or wireless) can all vary. When you enquire, tell us about your event and we'll put together what actually makes sense for your setup.
How many people can a hired sound system cover?
It depends on the system. A compact two-speaker setup is well suited to gatherings of 50 to 100 guests in a standard indoor venue — a garden, a function room, a hall. For 150 to 300 guests, you'd typically want a larger system with more output and likely a subwoofer. Open outdoor events need more power than indoors because sound disperses quickly in open air — roughly 20 to 50% more than you'd need inside. When you book, give us the venue type, rough guest count, and whether it's indoor or outdoor, and we'll make sure the system matches.
Do you deliver and set up the sound system?
Yes. We deliver to your venue, set up the speakers and mixer in the positions that work best for the space, and do a sound check before we leave. Delivery is available across Johannesburg, Randburg, Sandton, Midrand, Pretoria and surrounding areas. Delivery fees are calculated by distance from our depot — we'll confirm the fee when you get a quote.
Can I collect the sound system myself instead of paying for delivery?
Yes, self-collection is an option and it removes the delivery fee. Our team will walk you through the equipment at collection and make sure you know how to connect and operate everything before you leave. PA equipment has quite a few cables and connections, so the briefing at collection is worth paying attention to. Please bring adequate space in your vehicle to transport the speakers safely — they're bulky and need to be secure in transit.
What power supply does a hired sound system need?
Standard 220V South African plug points. For a two-speaker setup you'll typically need two nearby plug points, or one plug point with a multi-adaptor in a pinch. A larger system with a subwoofer and mixer will need two or more separate circuits, or at least a decent extension lead. Older venues — think older Joburg homes, farm venues, or small church halls — can sometimes have breakers that trip if too much is running at once, so it's worth checking the venue's electrical situation ahead of time. Let us know if you're unsure and we can advise.
How long does it take to set up the sound system?
For a standard two-speaker setup with a mixer and microphone, allow 30 to 45 minutes from arrival to sound check. Larger systems with subwoofers, additional speakers, or complex cabling take longer — up to 90 minutes. Please have the area cleared and ready when we arrive, and let your venue coordinator know we'll need access before guest arrival. We always build in time for a proper sound check before we hand over.
Do I need a sound technician, or can I operate the system myself?
Most of our hire packages are dry hire — delivered, set up, and then operated by you or your team. The systems are straightforward enough for a capable adult to manage: adjusting volume, switching inputs, and handling microphone levels. That said, if you're running a multi-input setup (DJ, live vocals, and a presentation, for example), or if you want someone monitoring levels throughout the event, a sound technician is available as an add-on. Ask when you book and we'll quote accordingly. The technician is not included as standard.
Can I connect my phone, laptop, or DJ equipment to the hired sound system?
Yes. Our systems support aux (3.5mm) input so you can connect a phone or laptop directly. Many of our packages also include Bluetooth connectivity for wireless streaming from a phone or tablet. For DJ equipment or professional audio sources, XLR and RCA inputs are available on the mixer. If you're plugging in a laptop for a presentation with audio, a DJ controller, or a microphone for speeches — tell us at booking so we confirm the right mixer and input options are in your package.
Is a DJ mixer included, or is that a separate hire?
The standard packages include a basic mixer for controlling volume and inputs — enough for music playback, a microphone, and a secondary source. A dedicated DJ mixer (with crossfader, EQ per channel, and cue outputs) is a separate hire item. If you're running a DJ who needs to bring their own controller, or if you want proper DJ mixing capability, flag that when you enquire and we'll make sure the right mixer is in the package.
Is a microphone included for speeches, an MC, or karaoke?
Yes, at least one microphone is included in most sound system hire packages. Wired handheld microphones are standard. If you need a wireless microphone — handheld or lapel — that's available depending on the package. For events with multiple speakers on stage, two or more wireless microphones can be added. If you're running karaoke, let us know in advance: the setup for karaoke (with lyrics display) is a bit different and may need additional equipment.
Can the hired sound system be used outdoors?
Yes, but outdoor events need a bigger system than you might expect. Sound disperses in open air, wind affects clarity, and ambient noise competes with your audio. A system that works perfectly in a 100-person function room may not project adequately across a garden of the same size. For outdoor events — garden parties in Sandton, outdoor weddings in Pretoria, corporate functions in Midrand — tell us it's outdoor when you enquire and we'll size accordingly. Also note: the equipment cannot get wet, so rain cover or a sheltered position is required.
What kind of events is sound system hire suited to?
The honest answer is: most events where people need to hear something. Weddings and receptions (speeches, DJ, background music), corporate events and year-end functions, birthday parties, school events and matric farewells, church services and community gatherings, kids' parties where you need music and an MC. How far in advance should I book sound system hire?
As early as you can, particularly for weekend events and December. December is our busiest period and event sound equipment rental books out weeks in advance. For most events, a week's notice is workable during quieter periods — but availability is not guaranteed, especially for Saturdays. For December events, we'd recommend booking at least four to six weeks out. For large corporate or wedding bookings at any time of year, earlier is always better.
What happens if I need to change or cancel my booking?
Date changes can be accommodated up to 2 weeks before your event, subject to availability — contact us as soon as you know and we'll do our best to move the booking. Inside 2 weeks we'll still try, but we can't guarantee we'll have availability on the new date. All changes must be confirmed in writing. For cancellations: if you cancel more than 7 working days before your event, you'll receive a full refund. Cancellations within 7 working days of the event date are not eligible for a refund of the booking fee. Check the full terms when you book.
What if the sound system has a technical problem during my event?
Call us. We do a thorough setup and sound check before we leave, and our equipment is regularly serviced, so technical failures are rare. But if something does go wrong — a speaker cuts out, a cable fails, something stops responding — contact us immediately on the day and we'll troubleshoot with you by phone. In most cases, the issue is a connection or a settings problem that can be sorted quickly. If you want on-site support throughout the event, book a sound technician as an add-on — that way someone is there to handle anything that comes up, without the scramble.

For December year-end functions, four to six weeks ahead is sensible.
