Frequently asked questions

How does slush machine hire work?
You book the package, we deliver the machine and everything that goes with it, set it up at your venue, and collect it once the event is done. You don't need to source anything separately — the slush mix, cups, lids, and straws are all included. Switch it on, let it freeze, and you're ready to serve.
What's included when I hire a slush machine?
The hire includes the double-barrel slush machine, slush mix in your chosen flavours, and 350ml cups, lids, and straws for the number of guests you've booked for. We bring it all in one delivery. Our packages are structured around guest count — Slush Hire for 50, Slush Hire for 100, or Slush Hire for 150 — so you always have exactly what you need for your crowd.
How long does a slush machine take to freeze?
In normal indoor conditions, the slush mix takes approximately one hour to reach a proper slushy consistency. Outdoors in direct sun or heat, it can take longer — which is why we recommend keeping the machine shaded and well-ventilated. We deliver ahead of your event start time to allow the first freeze to complete before guests arrive. Plan on the machine being set up at least two hours before you want to start serving, to be safe.
How many servings does one slush machine produce?
Our machine has two barrels, each holding 10 litres of slush mix — 20 litres total per fill. Using 350ml cups, a full load serves approximately 50 guests. For larger events, we provide additional mix to top up the barrels. The catch: every time you refill, the new liquid takes 30–40 minutes to refreeze. If you need to serve 100 or 150 guests, the machine will handle it, but you'll be refilling during the event. For events where everyone needs a slush in a short window, two or more machines are worth considering — let us know the structure of your event when you book and we'll advise.
Do you deliver and set up the slush machine?
Yes. We deliver to your venue, set the machine up where you'd like it, and collect everything once the event wraps up. Please make sure the area is clear and a plug point is within about 10 metres of where you want the machine. Delivery is available across Johannesburg, Randburg, Sandton, Midrand, Pretoria and surrounding areas; delivery fees are calculated based on your distance from our depot.
Can we collect the slush machine ourselves?
Yes, self-collection is an option and can save the delivery fee. We'll walk you through setup and operation when you collect. One important point: once liquid is in the barrels, the machine cannot be moved without first draining it. Make sure you have a secure, flat spot in your vehicle and that the machine travels empty — you'll fill and start it once it's at the venue.
What power does a slush machine need?
The machine runs off a standard 220V South African plug point and should be no more than 10 metres away from the socket. It should have its own dedicated circuit — don't run it on the same line as a coffee urn, microwave, or other high-draw appliances, as it can trip a breaker. If you're not certain about the power setup at your venue, message us before the event and we'll help you work it out. We've set up slush machine hire at everything from townhouse gardens in Randburg to corporate venues in Sandton, so we've seen most situations.
Can I hire a slush machine for cocktails?
Yes. We stock cocktail-specific slush mixes for Margaritas, Pina Coladas, and Strawberry Daiquiris, plus a range of fruit flavours that work well with spirits. There's one important rule: the mix must be fully frozen before you add the alcohol. Add it just before serving — never into a warm or partially frozen barrel. We include cocktail suggestions and quantities with every hire. Please note that you supply the alcohol; it's not included with the machine hire.
What slush flavours are available?
We have a good range across three categories. Fruit flavours include Strawberry, Bubblegum, Cream Soda, Grape, Litchi, Blue Raspberry, Pineapple, Mango, Cherry, Peach, and Lime. Cocktail mixes include Strawberry Daiquiri, Margarita, and Pina Colada. We also stock a gourmet chocolate and coffee range — Bar One Freezo, Mocha Choca, Hazelnut Cappuccino, Chocolate Hazelnut, Toffee Caramel, Cappuccino, and Milo, among others. The gourmet flavours cost a little more but are genuinely popular at grown-up events. When you book, you'll choose two flavours — one per barrel.
Do I need to hire someone to operate the slush machine?
Not necessarily. We show you how the machine works at delivery, and the controls are straightforward. Most hirers manage it themselves with a capable person keeping an eye on levels and topping up when needed. If you'd rather have one of our team there for the event to handle everything, we do offer a staffed hire option — just ask when booking. It's an add-on, not something included in the standard hire.
Do I need to clean the slush machine before it's returned?
No. The machine needs to be cool and empty before we collect, but the cleaning is on us. Just make sure the drip trays are in place during the event to keep things tidy. Please don't try to clean the machine yourself with scourers or rough cloths — that can scratch the surfaces and count as damage.
Are the slush mixes allergen-friendly?
The slush mixes don't typically contain gluten, and most fruit flavours are free from the major common allergens. However, we can't guarantee a nut-free product — our supplier may operate in a facility that also handles nuts, and the gourmet chocolate and coffee flavours may contain dairy or other allergens. If you have a guest with a serious allergy, request the full ingredient list when you book so you can make an informed call before the event.
Can a slush machine be used outdoors?
Yes, but with a few conditions. The machine must be kept out of direct sunlight — heat slows the freezing process significantly and you'll end up with a very slushy slush. It also cannot get wet. Set it up somewhere sheltered from rain, ideally under a gazebo or canopy. Air vents on the sides of the machine must be kept clear throughout the event. Indoors, the machine works without any special considerations beyond a decent plug point.
Is a slush machine safe for children's events?
Yes. The machine doesn't have exposed heating elements or obvious hazards, but it should sit on a stable, flat surface out of reach of small children who might try to operate the dispenser themselves. Keep the area around it clear — the machine can't be moved once it's filled with liquid, so site it carefully before you switch it on. An adult should be nearby whenever guests are helping themselves. Our team will run through safety basics at setup.
How far in advance should I book slush machine hire?
As early as you can — particularly for weekends, school holidays, and December. Slush machine hire in Johannesburg is in high demand over summer, and popular dates fill up quickly. A week's notice is usually workable during quieter months, but we can't guarantee availability for last-minute requests. For December events, book at least four to six weeks ahead.
What happens if I need to change or cancel my booking?
Let us know as soon as possible. Changes to your order can usually be accommodated up to two weeks before the event, subject to availability. Cancellations made more than 7 working days before your event date qualify for a full refund. If you cancel within 7 working days, the booking fee won't be refunded. Please put any changes or cancellations in writing. Check our full terms and conditions when you book for the complete policy.
What kinds of events is slush machine hire suited to?
Almost any warm-weather gathering benefits from one. Kids' birthday parties, school fêtes, year-end functions, garden parties, wedding receptions, corporate events, sports days, and market days are all popular. In Johannesburg and Pretoria summers, a slush machine at an outdoor event is genuinely appreciated — it's cooling, fun, and works well alongside other food stations. Pair it with a popcorn machine or candy floss machine for a full party spread. If you're planning something bigger, ask us what other kit can be combined.
More about slush machine hire randburg, johannesburg

The machine that builds its own queue

A slush machine does something almost no other party item can: it pulls a queue without any announcement. Kids clock the colour through a gap in the crowd. Adults spot it while pretending they're not interested. Within ten minutes of switching on, someone is always already at the front asking what flavours you have.

Slush machine hire in Johannesburg works year-round, though it shows up differently depending on the season. In summer, it's the obvious fix for an outdoor party — Joburg heat is brutal from October through February, and a continuous cold supply beats a cooler of cans that runs out at hour two. In winter, the picture shifts: it's adults at birthday parties and cocktail evenings who want the slush machine, and they're not drinking cream soda.

Our hire includes everything: the double-barrel machine, the slush mix in your chosen flavours, and cups, lids, and straws for your full guest count. You don't need to source anything separately. We deliver, set up, and collect.

Choosing the right flavour for your crowd

This is one of the decisions that genuinely matters, and it's worth thinking through before you book.

The fruit range — strawberry, bubblegum, blue raspberry, mango, cream soda, litchi, and others — is the obvious go-to for kids' parties in Randburg and family days in Midrand. They're bright, sweet, and immediately familiar. Bubblegum and cream soda are perennial favourites with younger guests. Blue raspberry disappears the fastest at most events.

The cocktail mixes — Strawberry Daiquiri, Margarita, Piña Colada — work with spirits you supply. More on those in the section below.

Each barrel holds a different flavour, so you're choosing two per booking.

Slush machine hire for cocktail parties and winter events

This is the version most people don't think of until someone suggests it for their birthday party in June, and then it becomes the part of the evening everyone talks about.

The cocktail slush mixes — Strawberry Daiquiri, Margarita, Piña Colada — run in the same machine as the fruit flavours, and they work exactly as you'd expect: guests add their own spirits, or you set up a simple drinks table alongside it and let people serve themselves. What makes it land at an adult event is the theatre of it. A frosted cocktail from a slush machine feels like more of an occasion than a glass from a pitcher, even if the ingredients are identical.

For winter hire, a covered indoor or semi-indoor space is the standard setup — a covered patio at a venue in Sandton, a function room in Midrand, a home entertainment area in Randburg. The machine does not need warmth to operate; it runs fine indoors in June. The main thing to think about is positioning: you still want it visible enough that guests actually use it, rather than tucked into a corner where people walk past without noticing.

One practical note: the barrel must be fully frozen before you add alcohol. Add spirits just before serving, never to warm mix. We flag this at delivery and leave instructions, but it is worth knowing in advance.

How heat affects your hire — what to know before the day

Direct sunlight is the main variable that trips people up with slush machine hire. The machine needs about an hour to reach proper slushy consistency in normal indoor conditions. In direct Joburg summer sun, that time stretches — sometimes to two hours or more — and the consistency suffers throughout the event.

The fix is simple: keep the machine shaded. A covered patio, a gazebo, a tent corner. Not tucked into a corner with no airflow — the vents on the side need to stay clear — but out of direct sun. An outdoor event at a venue in Pretoria or on a garden in the east of Johannesburg, both get the same strong afternoon sun. Plan for shade before the day, not after the machine is already struggling.

We account for this in our delivery window. We arrive ahead of your start time to give the first freeze time to complete. Plan for the machine to be on at least two hours before guests arrive.

Running it yourself vs. adding an operator

The machine is straightforward to operate — it's essentially a monitor-and-top-up job once it's running. The controls are simple, and we walk through everything at delivery. Most hirers manage it alongside everything else they're doing on the day without any issues.

That said, at events where a queue builds — school fêtes in Johannesburg, year-end functions with 100-plus guests, sports days — having a dedicated person at the machine makes a difference. They keep the flow moving, handle the top-ups (which need 30–40 minutes to refreeze each time), and stop guests from overserving themselves or wandering off with the cups stack. If you'd like one of our team there for the event, a staffed hire option is available as an add-on. It's not included in the standard slush machine hire rate.

What pairs well with slush machine hire

Slush works well on its own. As part of a small fun food setup, it becomes a proper station that guests gravitate towards all afternoon.

The combination we book most often is slush alongside popcorn machine hire — one handles the cold sweet craving, the other the warm salty one, and neither queue gets long enough to frustrate anyone. For kids' parties, those two together cover most of the food requests for the afternoon. Add candy floss machine hire and you've got a full carnival setup that runs itself.

Send us your date and guest count and we'll put together a bundled quote that covers everything in one invoice.
