A slush machine does something almost no other party item can: it pulls a queue without any announcement. Kids clock the colour through a gap in the crowd. Adults spot it while pretending they're not interested. Within ten minutes of switching on, someone is always already at the front asking what flavours you have.
Slush machine hire in Johannesburg works year-round, though it shows up differently depending on the season. In summer, it's the obvious fix for an outdoor party — Joburg heat is brutal from October through February, and a continuous cold supply beats a cooler of cans that runs out at hour two. In winter, the picture shifts: it's adults at birthday parties and cocktail evenings who want the slush machine, and they're not drinking cream soda.
Our hire includes everything: the double-barrel machine, the slush mix in your chosen flavours, and cups, lids, and straws for your full guest count. You don't need to source anything separately. We deliver, set up, and collect.
This is one of the decisions that genuinely matters, and it's worth thinking through before you book.
The fruit range — strawberry, bubblegum, blue raspberry, mango, cream soda, litchi, and others — is the obvious go-to for kids' parties in Randburg and family days in Midrand. They're bright, sweet, and immediately familiar. Bubblegum and cream soda are perennial favourites with younger guests. Blue raspberry disappears the fastest at most events.
The cocktail mixes — Strawberry Daiquiri, Margarita, Piña Colada — work with spirits you supply. More on those in the section below.
Each barrel holds a different flavour, so you're choosing two per booking.
This is the version most people don't think of until someone suggests it for their birthday party in June, and then it becomes the part of the evening everyone talks about.
The cocktail slush mixes — Strawberry Daiquiri, Margarita, Piña Colada — run in the same machine as the fruit flavours, and they work exactly as you'd expect: guests add their own spirits, or you set up a simple drinks table alongside it and let people serve themselves. What makes it land at an adult event is the theatre of it. A frosted cocktail from a slush machine feels like more of an occasion than a glass from a pitcher, even if the ingredients are identical.
For winter hire, a covered indoor or semi-indoor space is the standard setup — a covered patio at a venue in Sandton, a function room in Midrand, a home entertainment area in Randburg. The machine does not need warmth to operate; it runs fine indoors in June. The main thing to think about is positioning: you still want it visible enough that guests actually use it, rather than tucked into a corner where people walk past without noticing.
One practical note: the barrel must be fully frozen before you add alcohol. Add spirits just before serving, never to warm mix. We flag this at delivery and leave instructions, but it is worth knowing in advance.
Direct sunlight is the main variable that trips people up with slush machine hire. The machine needs about an hour to reach proper slushy consistency in normal indoor conditions. In direct Joburg summer sun, that time stretches — sometimes to two hours or more — and the consistency suffers throughout the event.
The fix is simple: keep the machine shaded. A covered patio, a gazebo, a tent corner. Not tucked into a corner with no airflow — the vents on the side need to stay clear — but out of direct sun. An outdoor event at a venue in Pretoria or on a garden in the east of Johannesburg, both get the same strong afternoon sun. Plan for shade before the day, not after the machine is already struggling.
We account for this in our delivery window. We arrive ahead of your start time to give the first freeze time to complete. Plan for the machine to be on at least two hours before guests arrive.
The machine is straightforward to operate — it's essentially a monitor-and-top-up job once it's running. The controls are simple, and we walk through everything at delivery. Most hirers manage it alongside everything else they're doing on the day without any issues.
That said, at events where a queue builds — school fêtes in Johannesburg, year-end functions with 100-plus guests, sports days — having a dedicated person at the machine makes a difference. They keep the flow moving, handle the top-ups (which need 30–40 minutes to refreeze each time), and stop guests from overserving themselves or wandering off with the cups stack. If you'd like one of our team there for the event, a staffed hire option is available as an add-on. It's not included in the standard slush machine hire rate.
Slush works well on its own. As part of a small fun food setup, it becomes a proper station that guests gravitate towards all afternoon.
The combination we book most often is slush alongside popcorn machine hire — one handles the cold sweet craving, the other the warm salty one, and neither queue gets long enough to frustrate anyone. For kids' parties, those two together cover most of the food requests for the afternoon. Add candy floss machine hire and you've got a full carnival setup that runs itself.
