Frequently asked questions

How does outdoor cinema hire work?
You book the setup, we deliver the screen, projector, and sound system to your venue, inflate and set up everything, and collect it once the event is done. You choose the movie; we provide the gear. Our team arrives at least an hour before your start time to get everything running before guests settle in. Once it's going, it looks after itself.
What's included with outdoor cinema hire?
The hire includes the inflatable screen, high-lumen projector, sound system, media player, all cables, and a remote. Everything you need to screen a movie is in one delivery. You supply the movie file (on USB or laptop), or connect via HDMI from your own device. If you want to stream from a service, you'll need your own device and a stable internet connection at the venue — check signal strength before the event.
How big is the outdoor cinema screen?
Our inflatable screens are typically around 10–14 feet wide, which gives a movie experience that's genuinely impressive for a garden setting and clearly visible for audiences of 30–80 people. If you're hosting a larger crowd, contact us — we may have larger screen options available. The image quality is best when guests are seated between roughly 3 metres and 15 metres from the screen.
How many people can watch the outdoor cinema?
A 10–14 foot screen works well for 30–80 guests seated comfortably on chairs, blankets, or bean bags (seating is not included in the hire). Beyond 80 guests, the back rows start to struggle for picture clarity. For larger events, ask us about extended options. The setup works best in a long, open garden or lawn — the longer the "cinema row" shape, the better.
When does the outdoor cinema need to start?
The projector needs darkness to look its best — direct sunlight completely washes out the image, and even twilight dims the picture significantly. In Johannesburg summers, that means starting after 7:30–8pm. In winter months, you can start earlier, from around 6–6:30pm. Plan your event so guests are settled and the movie starts at dusk or after. It's worth building a pre-movie social hour into the schedule.
Do you deliver and set up the outdoor cinema equipment?
Yes. We deliver, inflate the screen, set up the projector and sound, test the picture and audio, and make sure everything is working before we leave. Please have your outdoor space clear and know in advance where you want the screen positioned — once the screen is inflated and staked, moving it is disruptive. We need access to a 220V plug point within 25 metres of the screen. Delivery is available across Johannesburg, Randburg, Sandton, Midrand, Pretoria and surrounds; delivery fees apply based on distance from our depot.
Can we collect the outdoor cinema equipment ourselves?
Self-collection is not practical for the inflatable screen — it's a large piece of equipment that requires a specific vehicle, and setting up the inflatable correctly without prior experience tends to cause problems. Delivery and setup by our team is the standard option for outdoor cinema hire.
What power does the outdoor cinema setup need?
The projector and sound system run off a standard 220V South African supply. You'll need at least two plug points — one for the projector and one for the sound system — within reach of the setup area. A long, heavy-duty extension lead can bridge the gap if the nearest outlet is 15–25 metres away. If there's no mains access at your garden, ask us about generator options.
How long does it take to set up the outdoor cinema?
Allow 60–90 minutes for full setup — screen inflation, levelling, projector positioning, focus, and sound testing. Our team arrives with enough lead time before your start. Please make sure the area is accessible and clear when we arrive so we're not losing time moving obstacles.
What can I screen on the outdoor cinema?
You can screen anything you can play through an HDMI connection — movies from USB, a laptop, a hard drive, or a streaming service from your own device. HDMI is the most reliable connection. USB playback works for standard video files (MP4, MKV). If you're streaming from Netflix or a similar service, make sure your device is connected and the stream works before the event — we can't troubleshoot streaming account issues on the day.
What's the sound like?
We include a proper event sound system — not a portable Bluetooth speaker. The audio is clear and loud enough to fill a medium-sized garden without having to strain to hear dialogue. For larger outdoor spaces or events where strong bass matters, ask about upgraded sound options when you book.
What happens if it's windy or raining on the night?
Rain is a problem — the screen and equipment cannot get wet. If the weather looks uncertain, have a plan ready: either a covered area (a large open-sided marquee works), or a backup date you've already arranged with us. Wind is manageable up to a point — the inflatable screen is staked and weighted, but a strong sustained wind creates safety issues and we may need to take it down. We monitor conditions and will discuss options if weather is a concern around your event date.
Do I need someone to run the cinema setup?
Once we've set everything up and done a successful test screening, you or a capable adult can run it — press play, adjust volume, that's usually the extent of it. If you'd prefer one of our operators to stay for the event to manage the setup and handle any technical issues, that's available as an add-on. For long events or large crowds, having someone on-site gives you peace of mind.
How far in advance should I book outdoor cinema hire?
As early as you can. Outdoor cinema hire in Johannesburg is popular over summer weekends and the December holiday period. A week's notice works for quieter periods, but weekend bookings from October through January go quickly. For December events — year-end parties, holiday film nights, Christmas gatherings — book at least six weeks ahead. We fill up before December arrives.
What happens if I need to change or cancel my booking?
Let us know as soon as possible. Changes can be accommodated up to two weeks before your event, subject to availability. Cancellations more than 7 working days before the event qualify for a full refund. If you cancel within 7 working days, the booking fee is not refunded. All changes and cancellations must be confirmed in writing.
What events is outdoor cinema hire suited to?
Garden parties, birthday celebrations, school holiday movie nights, year-end functions, and wedding after-parties are the most popular bookings. It works well at Johannesburg and Pretoria homes with a decent-sized garden — even a standard suburban garden with 40 guests on blankets creates a proper movie night. It's also a great add-on alongside a popcorn machine hire, which is why we offer them together. Churches, community organisations, and schools in Randburg and Midrand use outdoor cinema for community events and fundraisers too. If the event needs something for guests to do after dark, outdoor cinema delivers.
More about outdoor cinema hire randburg, johannesburg

A garden becomes a different place after dark

There's a particular feeling when the inflatable screen goes up in a garden, the projector catches the dark, and fifty people settle in with something to eat and a film starting. Outdoor cinema hire produces that — and it's one of those setups that feels bigger than its parts. The screen, the sound, the open air. People who've never met end up talking between scenes.

Outdoor cinema hire in Johannesburg runs year-round, but conditions matter. Summer evenings mean a later start — direct sunlight washes out even a high-lumen projector completely, so the movie can't begin until well after dark, which in Joburg summers means 7:30–8pm at the earliest. Winter months have the advantage: darkness arrives earlier, closer to 6–6:30pm, and a cooler evening naturally pushes guests to sit together and focus. Both seasons work; the event schedule needs to account for whichever you're working with.

The screen, the sound, and what's actually included

Outdoor cinema hire includes the inflatable screen, a high-lumen projector, a sound system, a media player, and all cables. You supply the movie. Most hirers play from a USB drive or laptop via HDMI — that's the most reliable setup on the day. Streaming from a service works if your device is connected and the signal is strong, but internet reliability at an outdoor venue in Randburg or a garden in Pretoria is something to check in advance rather than assume.

Screen size runs to around 10–14 feet wide, which is genuinely cinematic for an outdoor setting and holds well for audiences of up to 80 guests. Sound is a proper event system — not a Bluetooth speaker — and carries clearly across a medium-sized garden. For larger outdoor spaces or guests spread across a longer distance, ask about upgraded sound when you enquire.

Self-collection isn't practical for the inflatable screen. It's a large piece of equipment and setting up an inflatable correctly without prior experience tends to go wrong. Delivery and setup by our team is the standard route.

The movie night as an event format

A screening on its own is a good evening. Built around it, it becomes a proper event.

The most popular combination we deliver for outdoor cinema hire across Johannesburg and Sandton is cinema alongside popcorn machine hire — there's a reason those two things have been sold together for a hundred years. It works. A bag of fresh popcorn while a film starts is a specific kind of satisfaction, and guests who might have been restless settle into it faster.

For evening events where the temperature drops — and Joburg nights do get cold, even in November — outdoor gas heaters hire keeps guests comfortable enough to stay seated through a two-hour film rather than drifting inside. A good heater placed near the seating area changes the atmosphere significantly. The same logic applies to a sound system upgrade: dialogue that's easy to hear keeps guests engaged in a way that straining to follow a conversation on screen does not.

Christmas holiday film nights, school end-of-year functions, and birthday parties in Midrand and Pretoria all book outdoor cinema regularly. So do estates and community organisations running weekend events for families. Churches in Johannesburg have used it for movie evenings that double as fundraisers. The format works because it gives people something to do together that doesn't require constant management.

Getting the space right before the day

The screen is staked and weighted once inflated — moving it is disruptive, and it's hard to do quickly. That means the positioning needs to be decided before our team arrives. Think about where guests will sit relative to the screen — the sweet spot for picture clarity is between roughly 3 and 15 metres away — and make sure there's a clear power point within 25 metres of the screen position. Heavy-duty extension leads can bridge the gap, but plan for this before the day rather than problem-solving it on arrival.

For venues without mains access in the garden — some larger properties in the Johannesburg area have outlying areas that aren't wired — ask us about generator options when you book.

Timing and weather

Rain and outdoor cinema don't mix. The equipment cannot get wet, full stop. If there's weather uncertainty around your event date, have a plan: a large open-sided marquee works as a shelter, or arrange a backup date in advance. A covered patio with good sightlines is another option. Our team monitors conditions and will talk you through options if your date looks uncertain.

Wind is manageable up to a point. The inflatable screen is staked and weighted, but a sustained strong wind creates safety issues. For events in Pretoria or outlying Johannesburg areas where afternoon winds can build, positioning the screen against a fence or wall on the windward side helps.
